Thread: any dobro players out there

fast43 - 11/24/2003 at 02:11 AM

I'm thinking about buying a resonator guitar. I'd like to know the advantages/diisadvantages of squareneck vs roundneck. And any other things to look for in buying one.
I'm leaning towards a Regal. They appear to be decent starter models.
I play guitar but I'm getting arthritis in my thumb and I'm having problems fretting. So I'm looking something new to play.

hey there,,,, I prefer a round neck,, my dobro, was built by Dobro, just before Gibson bought it out,, its a copy of their first model from '29 or so... its called a Hound dog.... their making a similar model now,, but Matt Barranti keep coming up to me at Lanaroo... telling me how much he loved it ...
a few of my friends have Regals.and like them....... but I bought 2 last winter,on ebay, and they can be bought on' Mandalay Music.. online,,,, made by 'Johnson' and a very very nice import from China....... I have a Johnson steel body resophnic Mando.. and the work on it is first quality,, like on their dobros.... I prefer the Johnson.. over the Regal.. its got a great sounding cone.... a very nice neck,,, the regals is fatter........and one of the best natural tops Ive seen.....!!!!! check it out.... I hope this answeres and question,, and feel free to ask anytime
wishin ya the Best,,
Dusty

Dusty, thanks for the info. I've been to a couple message boards and there's about an even split between Regal and Johnson.

I'm leaning towards a Regal because I can put a Quarterman cone upgrade in the D45 if I get the hang of it.

I gonna start looking for a used one that someone gave up on.

yea,, quarterman cones are about the best,,, I play with a old guy at a Blues grass jam and he has a Hounddog like mine, only square neck,, and had a QM put in it,, but played mine,,, and couldent tell the difference.....
ebay does have a selection from time to time..... but at the end of bidding, they seem to over bid,,,, Good luck and let me know If I can help ya in anyway!!!!!

I met this real old guy this weekend named Dusty, and he plays the square neck Dobro and fiddle..... and when he found out my name and that I played the Dobro....he got me 2 gigs in the Spring opening for him...
a funny guy,, about in his 80's....asked if I could sing,, and I said.. ''well, if ya wanna call it that, I do"
