Thread: What DVD's are you watching???

Dusty - 8/5/2004 at 10:29 AM

I jusy joined Netflix....and they have alot of music DVD's.. last night I saw,,,, Frank Zappa's 'Does Humor Belong in Music' recorded in 84 in NYC at the Pier..... good show,, typical Frank... till it gets to the end,,,, and they Rip on Whipping Post.... made me kinda wonder.... if it was'ent for Frank,,,,Playing up at the Boston Tea Party...I never would have met Brother's Duane and Berry behind it.....but that story has been told.. many times all over here.....
but watching the DVD,, his attitude completelly changed when he Played it ....makes me many gigs the ABB opened up for the early days..You can tell FZ 'Watched' Brother Duane.........What Duane told me on how they got the gig was...'So and So' ( I forget his name, but was the owner of the BTP) called down to the studio were the ABB was doing their first Album...and playing at ..hhmmmmm Umberto' night ( I got the book here,,someplace... but its early....and Im on a roll.....) and invited them up to open,,,Just one set..which was the same one they had been using in 69 to open for the Dead..and they jumped on the 300 hundred Dollars they were gonna get paid!!!....... I kinda expressed my displeasure to Duane....and 'AWWWWW man,,, ya gotta come check us out,,,, !!! " now me and my friends,,, hated sitting through opening bands,,, we timed what we were doing......and a openeing band put us out off when we found out there was a unanouced un heard of band.... we jusy blew around the back,,, and had some time to take care of......when we walked into Duane's and Berry passing around a bottle of Boone's farm wine..and we........but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,yea the story has been told.......its around,,,but back to Frank,,, the way he changed when they Played Whipping Post on the DVD made me think.......if it was for Duane.........
early morning thoughts on a rainy night,,,,,But what DVD's have u watched recentally??????
ps and if anyone need a free 2 week subscription to nexflix..... its 'Friend60'

CanPeach - 8/7/2004 at 01:54 AM

I've been watching a dvd of the Allman Brothers at Woodstock '94 that I put together from video with some other ABB tv stuff. This was the second dvd from video project I did, and worth the effort I thiink.

Whenever I make a copy for someone I just start watching then I end up watching the whole thing! The footage is better than the early 70's stuff I had on my first one.

I also just got the deluxe version of one of my favorite movies, "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" remastered with 18 extra mintues, now its 3 hours long

I haven't watched it yet, I'm saving that for a rainy day

Dusty - 8/13/2004 at 12:39 PM

Watched the Big Lewowski on DVD last night.. hehehe Dude Ive seen it before on tape,,, but DVD is so much better on the full the outakes lol...
and last week saw.. BB King , Sweet 16 which was taken from the Ali/Forman fight in Nigeria.. back in the early 80's....I love the B

Dusty - 8/17/2004 at 09:04 AM

A friend let me borrow the 'Led Zepplin DVD' and its killer its been taking me a few day to listen to it.....but they sure were a killer rock band .....I'm sure I saw them at least time was after the riots in Newport when is was suppose to be cancelled,,( to keep the crowds away), but they put it on any way.....and saw Jimmy Page once in the late 60's when he was in the Yardbirds...and he kept busting his e string

Dusty - 8/20/2004 at 12:41 PM

Shintano Katsu's.... Zatoichi:The Blind in japanese....from 1963....the only movie this guy made....very interesting to say the least

Dusty - 9/1/2004 at 03:56 PM

been watching a few,,,,one was,,, Bittersweet Motel with Phish,,I never saw them,,, and only heard their music a few times... but I found it interesting and i do really like the song , ' Wilson ' !!!
and right after that from netflix.. Anthem to Beauty, the Grateful Dead and that I liked,, ,, I was into the Dead in those years and hung around with Jerry and PigPen several times...and found what they did in the studio....and their concept of sound was pretty damn cool.... I recomend it!!!!!

Dusty - 9/3/2004 at 06:49 PM

Dusty - 9/10/2004 at 03:39 PM

CanPeach - 9/14/2004 at 06:48 PM

I bought the dvd of "The Natural" with Robert Redford. Haven't seen this is awhile and my son is 10 now and interested in baseball. I figured this would be a good movie for us to watch together. It also has commentary by Cal Ripken Jr. who happens to be my favorite baseball player.

The segments on the ABB, especially on Duane are great, very touching. The show also covers the Marshall Tucker Band and Skynyrd.

good effects.. and good story line,,,,

CanPeach - 10/25/2005 at 08:52 PM

The history of my favorite NFL team, Pittsburgh Steelers. Some great stuff here from the glory days in the 70's. No prima donnas or millionaire cry babies back in those days. Running back Rocky Bleier went to Nam, was wounded and told he'd never walk again.

He came back to Pittsburgh, worked his a#$ off and helped the team win a Super Bowl

Dusty - 10/28/2005 at 03:53 PM

watched 'the Insider' last night with Russel Crow and Al Pachino. ..about the Big Tobacco companys ....and how they influenced '60 minutes'......
Pretty good....a bit long..cause I poped it in after 10pm...but shows ya the power of Big Money!!!!!

Dusty - 11/16/2005 at 05:13 AM

...looking at all the shots from Newport...I remember some guy asking me 'kid. ya like that music???' when I was watching a old Bluesman during the sunday workshops....and I said ' yea' and the guy said' ya got good taste kid...'
I wish I could really say it was Bob...but I can't remember...aside that he had curly hair and wore dark glasses

CanPeach - 12/23/2005 at 06:32 PM

Got some cheap dvds for $10 each, I watched Adam Sandler in "The Waterboy" with my son, a good laugh out loud movie, especially if you like football

CanPeach - 1/13/2006 at 08:30 PM

Watched "Air Bud- Seventh Inning fetch" with my son. You know, the dog that plays sports. A good fun family film, you just have to get past the fact a dog is playing baseball

My son said it could happen, but even he was skeptical when Air Bud got called up by the Angels to play in the World Series at the end!

Dusty - 2/3/2006 at 04:09 AM

'Sling Blade' the 2 disc directors cut... very cool ....and it was cool hearing them making it on a real low budget...and about the music....and how they never though after 10 years it would become a Classic...
and another Billy Bob movie,, 'Pushing Tin..' on Air Traficc controllers working in a TRACON...outside of Jersey......brings back memories... .

CanPeach - 2/18/2006 at 08:03 PM

Just got the 2 disc version of Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid. Outstanding version, true to Peckinpah's original vision. Also has a nice interview with Kris Kristofferson and Donnie Fritz talking about the old days, Sam, Dylan and singing a couple of songs. Highly recommended

Dusty - 2/24/2006 at 02:46 AM

...Caught the 'Cream . Farewell Tour' from back in 1968.... actually it was pretty funny a stuffy BBC guy interviewing the 'lads' all the show shot were ,, mostly head shots and little that sucked but the interviews with them and their technique...was interesting,, but u could tell they were busting the guys balls and it was going over his head lol.... but when they played 'Crossroads' at about twice the speed of the record it was worth it all!!!!!
also rented ...'Pink Flyod,,live at Pompaii , the Directors cut" ( damn my spelling sucks lol) filmed back in 71... not bad,,,,fun to look back it all before 'the Dark Side of the Moon' came out...and the interview in the features looking back were interesting...

CanPeach - 3/23/2006 at 02:12 AM

Finally got to see the football movie "Rudy". Watched it with my son...damn if he didn't almost catch me crying near the end

Those sports movies do it to me everytime

Been digging out alot of old DVDs on netflix.....
'Taxi Driver'.. with Bobbie De niro.. still spell binding after all these years!!!!!

' The Basketball Diaries' about junkies,, I remember when it came out and the guy who wrote it, Jim Carrol....was a very interesting cat,,,, still is....

'Drugstore Cowboys'.... with Matt 'whats his name' about a crew of junkies ripping off drugstores... reminded me of some old sumbags I use to know....probally all dead now....

and got 'the Gangs of New York' in the last few days,,,, a 2 DVD disc about the early Irish gangs in NYC...gonna need a real lot of time to see it....

CanPeach - 4/25/2006 at 03:35 PM

I just got into watching the new Battlestar Gallactica series, I gotta admit, its now my favorite show on TV. Great stories and characters, nothing at all like the cheesy 70s show. I got the first season on dvd to catch up, highly recommended to sci-fi fans (now that Enterprise has sailed into the sunset, its all we have)

Dusty - 5/12/2006 at 04:22 AM

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind....
I liked it alot....funny how real life can be so surreal

Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell) has it all -- a hot TV hit, "The Gong Show," and the love of a good woman (Drew Barrymore). But he's got one big secret: He's a CIA assassin who kills while purportedly escorting his game show winners on their vacation prizes. George Clooney directs and co-stars with Julia Roberts in this film based on the book of the same name, authored by the real-life Barris.

Dusty - 5/19/2006 at 04:58 AM

'The Five People you meet in Heaven" with John Voight....very good....

I read the book awhile back.... and theres always liberties they take in the scpipt,,,, but it was a very good movie ... one of those that make ya go... 'HHHmmmm...'

Dusty - 5/27/2006 at 04:31 AM

just saw the 'Lord of War' with Nic Cage,, very good about gun running and the complexities of it....

Dusty - 7/3/2006 at 09:36 PM

Damn,,,I swear I added a few recentally!!!!... Syriana. with George Clooney....very good!!! and 'Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price '....very interesting,,,,, walmarts run by scumbags. ...!!!!!..
I'm gonna start to cut down on My use of them... after seeing the movie.... and how they screw the workers in the USA and on and on!!!! butt munchers!!!!!

CanPeach - 7/8/2006 at 02:48 PM

Last night I started watching the Star Trek time travel box set my son bought me for Father's Day, great to see those old shows on dvd with no commercials

Dusty - 7/12/2006 at 02:59 PM

Uncovered: The War on Iraq this was very good....not the usual left leaning type of movie.. but ex CIA, State dept... DIA, DOD and ex members of the Bush 'party '
I was taken back by the whole thing.... We have definally been 'hyjacked' as a country ....

I'm on My way , Brother

Dusty - 7/25/2006 at 07:52 PM

Blues Story.... a very good dvd from netflix....all the old guys that are still living as of 2003.... a few have left... but its in their own words... and has music and video from them...back then and now.....
like I said very very good....worthy of several watches!!!!

also watched the Grateful Dead trucking up to Buffalo good Dead show....

Dusty - 8/2/2006 at 01:41 PM

My old Friend 'BB King & Friends'.....had about eveyone in it, SRV ... Eric...Albert King.....Etta James..and many others.....pretty good to say the least... seeing Stevie.... always makes me...aahhh well, sad...

CanPeach - 8/4/2006 at 07:50 PM

Picked up some cheap used dvds at Blockbuster, I'm finally going to watch "Walk The Line" this weekend, saw the first few minutes already and it looks good

CanPeach - 8/6/2006 at 02:04 AM

Walk The Line is a great movie, Joaquin Phoenix is great as Johnny Cash, and he can sing He's very convincing as the man in black Reese Witherspoon is good as June Carter too.

Dusty - 8/10/2006 at 03:17 PM

yea Neil...I saw that a while back.. and was very impressed!!!!!

last night I watched 'the Fastest Indian' with Sir Anthony Hopkins....very cool movie!!!!

the night before I saw the original cut of ''Cleark's'' ,but I guess, I'd have to be 25 years younger to enjoy it...and that aint gonna happen... hahaha!

Dusty - 9/3/2006 at 01:18 AM

been actually watching way to many... but some of the good one's have been.

'V for Vendetta' now this was real good... the effects , the story line, the acting ... everything........I actually went out and bought it after I saw it twice...!!!!!!

'Meet Joe Black' another good one.. it was filmed right here in RI, a few years back...very good with Brad Pitt as 'Death' and Sir Anthony Hopkins as his victim....

"Seven years in Tibet' with Brad Pitt... very good...I liked it alot!!!

'This is Spinal Tap' hahaha now I had never seen this before.. when it first came out, I had better things to do that go to movies.. now In my old age... seems DVD's are the way I go
funny.. a band on the down swing... and the getting lost under the stage brings back memories... of the Boston Garden with the ABB... or rather Gregg and DDT, during the drum solo... and taking a quick break... it was their fault... thinking I had a clue in knowing were I was going....I still can see the look of panic on Gregg's face as we walked around in circle's..... hahaha

and last but by no means least.... ' Neil's Young's: Heart of Gold"
I rate it as one of the greatest music concert's I have seen ( on DVD at least....)....very heart felt...spellbinding...aahh loss for words....see it..and you will love it!!!!!!

CanPeach - 9/3/2006 at 03:32 AM

Hey Dusty, I'll have to check out that Neil Young dvd. Not a dvd, but I took my son to see the movie "Invincible" today.

Great movie if you are a football fan, also a nice look back at the good old '70s

CanPeach - 11/23/2006 at 08:42 PM

Heaven Can Wait, with Warren Beatty.

Dusty - 12/15/2006 at 05:03 AM

I saw a good Indie one back a bit called 'Dark Days' about the homeless in NYC that lived underneath the train tracks and had over a peroid of 40 some years built houses , had running water. electricity, and developed their own community..... and the story behind the story was as amazing... how the guy who never filmed any thing, turned it into a film...
its on Netflix.... and its truly inspiring.. on so many levels.....I cant really do justice to it trying to explain it... but get it.. and you too .. will be Inspired!

Dusty - 1/2/2007 at 04:20 AM

Townes Van Zandt: be here to Love Me.

I've known some of his music and a bit of his legend.. but this guy is one gifted songwriter and one crazy dark MF'er...
real good and much so, I wrote a few songs...

Went to see "I Am Legend". First half was great, not too thrilled with the ending though. Went out and bought "The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston, the 1971 version of this story. Loved the scene where Chuck is sitting in an empty theater watching Woodstock and he knows all the lines

Been watching some baseball movies (tis the season ). It was cool to hear that Rangers young slugger Josh Hamilton watched "The Natural" during his rehab (glad to see the kid healthy again). One of my favorites.

Also watched "For Love Of The Game" with Kevin Coster.

finally got to watch "Gran Torino". Clint Eastwood should have won an oscar for this. Great movie, and if its his last on screen performance, like the Duke in "The Shootist", a great way to go out.

Watched "Tropic Thunder" again, damn, this movie had its critics but it still makes me laugh. Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious
